Study on the use of and trafficking in tramadol in Togo

Tramadol use and trafficking is a serious concern for governments in West Africa, and in Togo in particular.
Tramadol use is widespread in West Africa, particularly among young people, motorbike taxi drivers, vulnerable groups, etc. It has also been suggested that trafficking in tramadol could be fuelling jihadist groups in West Africa.
In order to assess the extent of consumption and trafficking in Togo, ANCE plans to conduct a study.

Methodology

  • Literature review (reports, strategies, legal and institutional framework and press articles);
  • Development of a survey questionnaire (questionnaire provided by GI-TOC).
  • Field interviews: The interviews took place with key informants (fifteen (15) in Lomé, five (5) in Aflao and ten (10) in Cinkassé) and exchanges with two (2) groups (with at least 20% women).
  • Transcription of interview notes and drafting of the study report.

Survey target groups

  • The relevant national authorities;
  • Transport unions;
  • Tramadol users and people directly involved in the illicit market);
  • NGOs and investigative media);
  • Citizens close to the borders.

This project is financially supported by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime (GI-TOC) based in Geneva.
